While there is no question that divorce is a difficult and emotional process, many studies have been done examining the positive effects of divorce after the process is completed. More specifically, the positive effects a divorce can have on a person’s health may actually outweigh the negative effects one experiences when never marrying or remaining married, whether happily or unhappily.
According to a recent study done by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the London School of Economics, divorce might not be as unhealthy as was once previously believed. The study, which followed more than 10,000 people who were all born during the same week in 1958, suggested that both middle-aged men and women who had gone through divorce were as equally healthy as their counterparts who were still married. While the study showed that many people do experience a health decline right after divorce, most people are able to eventually return to normal health standards in the long-term.
Researchers tracked the participants at various age markers during their life and then each participant was given a medical examination between the ages of 44 and 46. The results of the exam indicated that those individuals who had been divorced and then remarried did not have a higher risk of suffering respiratory or cardiovascular disease than those who were still married to their original spouses. The study also concluded that those who were living with someone but who had never married had the same health standards as those married couples who had married in their 20s or early 30s. Conversely, those individuals who had never married or who were no longer married and did not have a current partner were the most likely candidates to suffer these types of illnesses.
While the study’s results regarding health and divorce are certainly interesting, the divorce process itself can be a very strenuous and difficult period in even the healthiest person’s life.
