Chris Rock Divorce Could Cost Him Millions

When a couple decides to end their marriage, it is not uncommon for one spouse to attempt to obtain a significantly disproportionate settlement in their favor. This is especially true when one of the spouses has a large estate. Divorce settlements are often complicated no matter how much money is involved, but when a split includes high assets, the process can be even more complex and in many instances become unnecessarily combative. High asset divorces are complicated and that is why, if you are involved in a high asset divorce, it is imperative that have a trusted divorce lawyer helping you navigate the process.

According to recent reports, actor Chris Rock and his estranged wife, Malaak Compton-Rock could be in for a nasty fight as the couple seeks to end their twenty year marriage. The soon-to-be ex-couple have two children and are reportedly at odds over the amount Ms. Compton-Rock should receive in the divorce. According to court documents, both parties have agreed to share custody of their daughters, which allows for the smooth resolution of at least one issue. However, the fact that the actor and comedian is reportedly worth approximately $70 million could make the property division portion of their divorce settlement exceedingly more difficult.

Further, reports indicate that Ms. Compton-Rock is seeking a large financial settlement. It should be noted that the couple did have a prenuptial agreement; however, a sunset clause in the document resulted in the expiration of the terms of the document. This means the battle over the family fortune could quickly turn ugly. Court documents state that Ms. Compton-Rock is seeking a settlement that is “commensurate with the marital standard of living because of all her child-rearing and charitable endeavors”, as Ms. Compton-Rock allegedly gave up her career in public relations when the couple married and started their family.

This case could settle amicably, but in most situations where significant assets are involved, neither party is willing to walk away from what they feel they deserve. Thus, high-asset divorce can be very contentious and the process can be extremely time consuming. At the Law Offices of Iafrate & Salassa, we know how handle high-asset divorce with precision.
