What Not to Do When Getting a Divorce in Michigan

Divorce ranks high in terms of stressful life events. It is impossible to know how you will react until you actually go through it, which is one of the many reasons why you need an experienced Michigan divorce attorney on your side. Decisions made during this time have the potential to impact your well being and financial security for years into the future. While our attorneys will work to protect your rights and interests through the process, it is important to know the actions you will want to avoid.

What to Avoid During Your Divorce

Under the Michigan Compiled Laws, there are specific guidelines in terms of the divorce process i and the issues that will need to be resolved before your divorce decree can be granted. Our attorneys have extensive experience in protecting clients through even the most complex divorce cases and will guide you along the way. However, there are certain actions you will want to avoid, which could be detrimental to your divorce case.

While fault grounds such as adultery or alcohol and drug addiction may play a role in alimony, property division, or child custody proceedings, the only grounds for filing for a divorce is that the marriage is irretrievably broken. It is common to feel nostalgic about your former relationship once your divorce paperwork is filed, but be aware that having intimate relations for even one night could delay having your divorce finalized. In addition to romantic liaisons, Business Insider advises against doing the following:

  • Do not let your emotions get the best of you. Acting out in spite or refusing to cooperate only makes the process more difficult and will likely cost you money in the long run.
  • Do not give to avoid a fight. Giving into your spouse’s unreasonable demands may seem preferable to lengthy negotiations. Trust your divorce attorney’s advice on this though, to avoid short changing yourself and future regrets.
  • Do not attempt to hide, spend, or give away assets.  Hiding money or assets and giving away property to avoid seeing your spouse get it could backfire in court, costing you more in the long run.
  • Do not ignore the mail or paperwork. Keep paper copies of everything, including letters, receipts, and credit card or bank account statements. Notify your attorney immediately if you receive any type of court documents in the mail.
