Social Media Tips During Your Divorce

We live in a social media age. Nearly every aspect of our lives has been touched by social media, including our divorces. If you are working through a divorce, keep the following social media tips in mind:

Adjust Your Privacy Settings

If you have never adjusted your accounts’ privacy settings before, now is the time to do it. Avoid miscommunication and interaction with people you do not want to interact with by making your accounts and content private. This is also a good time to go through your friends and followers lists to remove anybody you no longer want to see your posts.

Do Not Post About Your Divorce on Social Media

Your divorce does not belong on social media. Keep any discussions about the divorce, your property breakdown, your feelings about your spouse or his or her lawyer, or the court off social platforms where they can be shared, screenshotted, and used against you.

When you need to vent, do it over the phone or face-to-face with a close friend or loved one. There is nothing wrong with venting your frustrations, but a public social media profile is not the appropriate place for it. Even if your profile is not public, anything you post online is beyond your control. Friends and followers can share your content with others and use it without your permission.

Keep Your Children and Details of Your Parenting Plan Off Social Media

Additionally, discussions about your children, your child support order, and your parenting plan should not be on social media. Posts about your children can be especially sensitive. When you already have an uncertain or even rocky parenting relationship with your former partner, keeping your children off social media is an easy way to avoid conflict.

Do Not Post Anything that can be Misconstrued or Used Against You

A significant part of keeping it pleasant on social media is avoiding engaging with “trolls” and anybody else who tries to bait you into making inflammatory and emotionally charged comments and posts. Although you might be tempted to respond to this kind of content, do not do it. Even an innocent post or response may be taken out of context and used to support a claim that you are mentally unstable or verbally abusive.

Similarly, do not post content that can be used to paint you in an inaccurate light. Take down photos of you drinking alcohol, engaging in dangerous or even remotely unsavory activities, and if you are seeing a new partner before your divorce is finalized, images of you with him or her. All of these kinds of images can be used to support inaccurate claims about your character or lifestyle.
