What are the First Signs of Divorce?

All marriages go through difficult patches, but that does not mean that all marriages are headed for divorce. It is essential that when people think they want to get a divorce, that they are very certain about that decision. It is a big one that will impact you for years to come. So, how do you know if you and your spouse are just struggling temporarily, or if this is the beginning of the end of your marriage?

You Constantly Feel Hostile Toward Your Spouse

Hostility is a form of sustained and heightened anger. If you are regularly agitated, distressed, or feel off balance in your marriage, it may be a sign of divorce. Signs of hostility include blaming, criticizing, and provoking each other. If you are constantly arguing over trivial matters, that could be a sign that you or your spouse feel hostile in the marriage and that it is time to end it.

You No Longer Communicate

Communication is one of the backbones of any healthy marriage. If you suddenly feel as though you do not want to communicate with your spouse, it may be a sign of divorce. You may not want to talk to them because all conversations lead to an argument. Or, you may simply want to share good news with someone you feel genuinely cares rather than your spouse. Either way, if you stop communicating, it is a sign that divorce may be in your future.

You are Indifferent

Divorce is a very difficult thing to go through, but sometimes, people may be indifferent about it. If you suddenly feel apathetic about your marriage, and do not care whether it survives or not, it is a sure sign that it may end in divorce soon.

You Feel Alone

Being in an unhappy marriage is an extremely lonely feeling. If you feel alone even when you are sitting right beside your spouse, or you have started doing everything separately, it may be a sign that you are headed for divorce.

You are Planning for Life After Divorce

People sometimes imagine their lives post-divorce even before they have broached the subject with their spouse. Maybe you think that you can receive alimony or child custody. Perhaps you have a strategy for keeping some of your most prized possessions. Whatever thoughts you are having, if you are developing a plan for your life after the divorce, it is likely going to happen.
