Wife of Oklahoma Oil Man Deposits Huge Settlement Check

When a married couple in Macomb County decides to call it quits and end their marriage, they will have to resolve several issues before they can officially and legally finalize their divorce. Sometimes agreements can be reached without too much turmoil. However, in most cases, deciding on things like child custody, child support payments, spousal support and property division does not come easy. This is especially true when the couple has a large estate.

Imagine, if you can, cashing a check for nearly $975 million, an obviously staggering amount. While most people will never see that kind of money in their lifetime, especially in one check, that is the amount of one recent divorce settlement in Oklahoma. Because $975 million is enough money to last several lifetimes, one would think the recipient would gladly accept a fraction of that amount without so much as a word, but not in the case of Sue Annb Arnall, as her soon to be ex-husband, billionaire Harold Hamm, is worth a whole lot more.

Mr. Hamm and Ms. Arnall are now officially divorced and Ms. Arnall has since deposited her check. Despite same, the conflict is far from over as, according to reports, Ms. Arnall’s first reaction to the Judge’s ruling that her ex-husband pay nearly $995 million in property settlement was disappointment. Ms. Arnall reportedly felt that the decision was not a fair or equitable division of the couple’s assets, accumulated during their 25 years of marriage, and that she would be filing an appeal, as Mr. Hamm is reportedly worth $14 billion.

When Ms. Arnall recently deposited the check for $974.8 million, after already having received $23 million from Mr. Hamm during the divorce process, Mr. Hamm’s attorneys believed that Ms. Arnall was dropping her appeal. Same could not be farther from the truth as Ms. Arnall still plans to appeal the settlement ruling believing that her appeal shouldn’t be denied just because she “accepted, in the interim, a small portion of the estate that we built over more than two decades.”

While this is an extreme example of a dispute over the division of marital property, anyone enmeshed in divorce proceedings, no matter the size of their net worth, still faces similar decisions. In fact, because most people make much less money than Mr. Hamm and Ms. Arnall, the amount they receive in a divorce settlement typically plays a much larger role in their quality of life post-divorce.
