Tips for a Peaceful Divorce

Divorce brings with it a wide range of emotions. You will likely feel upset, frustrated, angry, and even betrayed. Although there is no such thing as an easy divorce, not every case has to end in a bitter courtroom battle. It is possible to get a peaceful divorce, even if you and your spouse do not agree to all the terms.

When you can get through the process somewhat peacefully, it not only reduces the negative emotions you may feel, but can also help in post-divorce life. This is especially true if children are involved and you and your spouse will need to co-parent afterward. To ensure your divorce proceeds as peacefully as possible, follow the tips below.

Remain Respectful

Mutual respect is essential for a peaceful divorce. While this may seem impossible, particularly if your spouse was unfaithful or has an addiction, it is important to not lose sight of your original goal. If you can remain respectful with your spouse, it greatly increases the chances that they will also act respectfully. This does not mean that you have to agree to everything your spouse wants. It simply means that you must act civilly towards your spouse to have any hope of them doing them the same.

Share a Common Goal

If your situation allows it, try to come to a common goal with your spouse. For example, if you have children together, you may both have the goal of making the process as easy as possible for them. In that situation, you can then keep that goal in mind when making decisions and allow the best interests of the children to guide you through the process. When it is possible for you and your spouse to share a common goal, always make sure you tell your divorce lawyer what that goal is so they can also work towards it with you.

Choose the Right Type of Divorce

Litigation almost always makes a divorce more contentious and so, if you want a peaceful divorce, it is best to avoid going to trial. Michigan provides many alternatives to litigation for divorcing such as collaborative law and mediation. With both of these alternative dispute resolution methods, you and your spouse will work together with your lawyers to resolve the disputes during the divorce process without going to trial. Both mediation and collaborative law also put you and your spouse in control of the process, which can make for a more peaceful divorce while you are going through the process, and afterward.
